Looks like we might not see an OLED-equipped iPad Air until at least 2023, pregnant the rumored iPad Air five could nonetheless pack an LCD screen.

The Elec's report cites "people familiar with the matter," and says the partnership with Samsung Brandish was "stopped due to either the unmarried stack structure of OLED panel or profitability issues or both."

The term "single stack" refers to a unremarkably used construction for many OLED panels, in which the red, green and blue pixels are stacked to grade i emission layer.

However, Apple supposedly wanted the iPad Air's OLED console to be made using a 2-stack tandem construction, in which two crimson, green and blue pixels were used. As well as theoretically doubling the brightness levels, that would also prolong the panel'south lifespan by 4 times.

Samsung reportedly pushed dorsum against the asking, making that betoken that information technology had simply commercialized unmarried-stack OLED panels so far.

"Unless the visitor tin exist sure that the 10.86-inch OLED iPad will exist sold for a long time, preparing for the back-cease module process for the products tin exist plush for the Southward Korean company," the source stated.

LG Brandish is apparently a possible culling supplier, in that it already produces OLED panels with a two-stack tandem structure. But, The Elec says, information technology has a relatively small production capacity, making it unlikely.

All of which means that if the iPad Air 5 does launch next year, it likely won't be sporting an OLED panel. The source claims that the primeval that we could see an OLED-equipped iPad would be 2023, only that it could even take until 2024.

Regardless, co-ordinate to the previous reports, the side by side iPad Air could however accept the potential to rival some of the best tablets on the market right at present.

A few months ago, nosotros reported that the iPad Air five could pack iPad Pro-similar features, including an upgraded dual-camera organization, 5G connectivity and a LiDAR scanner. It's besides rumored to be powered by the A15 Bionic chip, which is seen in the electric current iPhone 13 lineup.
